Footnotes

  • Chesterfield and Newcastle – twice Prime Minister – were relations, old friends, and political allies, who from time to time fell out. In 1763 Chesterfield wrote a 'Character' of Newcastle, describing him as hard-working, good-natured, and incorruptible, but also as 'exceedingly timorous, both personally and politically, dreading the least innovation'; believing that 'he had no superior parts or eminent talents' and was essentially ineffective (see Miscellaneous Works, edited by Lord Mahon, ii, pp. 483-5).
