Anonymous sale, Sotheby's Parke Bernet, December 20, 1974, lot 344

The scene on the plate is copied after the lithographs published in Sobranie Mundirov Rossiiskoi Imperatorskoi Armii [Collection of Uniforms of the Russian Imperial Army], 1830, which reproduced scenes painted by Guard Engineer Staff Captains Fedorov, Aleksandrov and Belousov. Military themes painted on porcelain were especially popular after the Napoleonic Wars when national pride ran high and the victorious Russian army was celebrated in fine art and literature. The first cabinet plates with various regimental scenes were produced in the reign of Tsar Aleksandr I and the last were manufactured during the reign of Nicholas II.

This plate is among the finest examples of cabinet plates of its kind illustrating the soldiers from the most celebrated elite regiment of the Russian Imperial Army.
