Footnotes

  • Merce Cunningham (1919-2009) is considered one of the foremost choreographers of recent times and one of the greatest dancers. An innovator throughout his seventy year career, Cunningham was at the forefront of the American avant-garde, stretching the boundaries not only of dance but of contemporary visual and performing arts. Collaborations with his long-term partner, the composer John Cage, had an enduring influence on his work, and artists were heavily involved in performance decor, costume and lighting design from an early stage. Artistic Advisors to the company have included Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, Mark Lancaster, Dove Bradshaw and William Anastasi. Having explored the possibilities of dance on film as early as the 1970s, Cunningham's last collaboration before his death was with British artist Tacita Dean, who filmed three days of company rehearsals in a former Ford assembly plant in Richmond, California, in late 2008. Still uncut at the time of the choreographer's death, the finished work, Craneway Event, was unveiled at Frith Street Gallery in London in 2010.

The portfolio offered here is a collection of photographs donated to the Merce Cunningham Dance Company by the featured artists, each printed to the specifications of the artist. It comprises work by Chuck Close, Gregory Crewdson, William Eggleston, Olafur Eliasson, Peter Fischli & David Weiss, Candida Höfer, Vera Lutter and Cindy Sherman.
