Sandaig, located on the west coast of the mainland, in Ross-shire was one of the most important places in Scotland for Winifred Nicholson. The artist stayed there with Kathleen Raine, usually at Gavin Maxwell's house Camusfeàrna, on several occasions throughout the 1950s and greatly appreciated the quiet and outstanding natural beauty, which provided much inspiration for her painting. During her time in Sandaig, Nicholson immersed herself in the way of life and traditions, making friends with several locals in the process. In The Piper who played the Retreat from Tobruk Nicholson depicts a local shepherd playing his bagpipes.
