Footnotes

  • Provenance: a Scottish private collection

The present lot is a tour de force of Qing Dynasty joinery demonstrated in the sumptuous all-round carving of the legs, each with the impressive phoenix amidst cloud scrolls, flanking the apron carved with a central spread-winged bat flanked by phoenix in flight. The combination of bat and phoenix may also be seen on an impressive zitan throne, luohan chang, 18th/19th century, from the Lin Muhe Collection, exhibited in the National Museum of History, Beijing, illustrated in Splendour of Style: Classical Furniture from the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Beijing, 1999, Catalogue, pp.110-111; see also bat and phoenix carving on a zitan throne, mid-Qing Dynasty, from the Capital Museum, Beijing, illustrated by Tian Jiaqing in Classic Chinese Furniture of the Qing Dynasty, London, 1996, Catalogue, no.54, pp.136-141, where it is noted that the throne was probably sent as tribute from Guangdong or was made at the Imperial workshop staffed by Guangdong cabinetmakers.
