A rare pair of 'green dragon' jars and covers
Daoguang seal marks and of the period
Each enamelled in turquoise-green outlined and enhanced in black on the globular bodies with two four-clawed snarling dragons striding in mutual pursuit of flaming pearls, between a band of the Bajixiang, Eight Buddhist Emblems, around the shoulder, and stiff lappets above the foot, the straight-sided flat-topped cover with a coiling dragon and pearl.

    A Daoguang-marked jar of this pattern was included in the exhibition, Imperial Porcelain of Late Qing, From the Simon Kwan Collection, Art Gallery, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, 1983, illustrated in the Catalogue, no. 58. The form of the present lot was first developed and then imitated throughout the Qing Dynasty; for a Qianlong-marked jar, see Chinese Porcelain, The S. C. Ko Tianminlou Collection, Hong Kong Museum of Art, 1987, vol.1, pl.114.
