On the Racecourse signed and dated 'Willy Sluiter 1911' (lower left) and dedicated 'To Mrs W A Gibson in kind remembrances Glasgow April 4 1913' pastel 41 x 32.5cm (16 1/8 x 12 13/16in).
Footnotes
Throughout the second half of the 19th C there was a significant dialogue between Scottish and Dutch artists, and the RGI in Glasgow had a particularly progressive exhibitions policy. Willy Sluiter was a noted Dutch painter who had an exhibition at George Davidson's Gallery in Glasgow in October 1913, and he may have met William Alfred Gibson, a landscape painter in the Dutch manner, on his trips to the city. This striking racecourse image could have been inspired by a day trip to Ayr.
