Footnotes

  • This bustling view of Bridge Street, when it was one of Chester's main thoroughfares is dominated by the tower of St Peter's Church, and the Flemish gothic style tower of the Town Hall. The Town Hall, Northgate St, was designed by William Henry Lynn and built 1865-69, and was modelled on the Cloth Hall at Ypres. This replaced the Common Hall or Exchange Hall, built 1695-98, which had burnt down in 1862.

The Dutch Houses are on the west side of Bridge Street, and were built during the mid-17th century, probably just after the Civil War.

It is most unusual for Louise Rayner to date her pictures. Generally, she preferred to give her works a timeless quality by leaving them undated.
