A George III Irish carved giltwood cartouche wall mirror
A George III Irish carved giltwood cartouche wall mirror
The eagle cresting above an elaborately pierced cartouche-shaped frame carved with flowers, leaves and scrolls, the plate possibly replaced, now with an oil gilded finish over earlier water gilding, 166cm high, 99cm wide, (65" high, 38.5" wide).
Sold for £17,500 inc. premium

Footnotes

  • The exaggerated rococo carving on the present mirror coupled with the large eagle cresting have marked affinities with the frame of a George III overmantel mirror, possibly bought by William and Mary Kirkpatrick for Donacomper, Celbridge, Co. Kildare, sold Christie's house sale, 25 July 1977, lot 109. Further 18th century Irish mirrors exhibiting closely related carving include a group of three pier mirrors supplied to Sir Thomas Taylour, first Lord Bective, for Headfort, Kells, Co. Meath (see The Knight of Glin and James Peill, Irish Furniture, 2007, pp. 262-263, pls. 230, 232, 233 and 234)

Auction Notices

  • please note that it is probable that the comparable mirrors stated in the footnote as being from Headford House were probably originally supplied for Sir Thomas Taylour's Town House, Smithfield Dublin. Hence they are likely date from a slightly earlier period.
