Footnotes
Marten de Vos was recorded by Karel van Mander as having travelled to Rome in 1552; the Flemish biographer also states that de Vos visited Florence and Venice, where he worked in Tintoretto's studio. He returned to Antwerp in 1556 and by 1564 he became a master of the Guild of Saint Luke in the city. He was also the founder of the Society of the Romanists, which brought together artists, connoisseurs and humanists who had travelled to Rome.
Another version of the same subject, by a different hand, was sold in these rooms on 13 April 2011, lot 57.
