'We always say that first comes the material, then the form and finally we elaborate the function of the product by studying its ergonomics, limitations and capabilities. The streets of São Paulo are a sort of laboratory for our designs. Whenever we need inspiration, we rely on the chaos and beauty of the city we live in.' Campana Bros.
Humberto and Fernando Campana furniture designs are intrisically bound to their country of origin, Brazil. The works simultaneously reference both the vibrant colours of nature and carnival, as well as the detritus and the ad-hoc make-do structures found in the favelas. Their improbably graceful functional forms are composed of 'found objects' as diverse as squashed plastic bottles, scraps of wood, fabric off cuts, barbed wire, rope, cardboard and in the case of the present lot, stuffed children's toys.
In their hands, coils of rope, stuffed alligators, and Bubble Wrap are transformed into shapes of unexpectedly graceful chairs, lounges, and other pieces of highly functional if improbable furniture. This element of playfulness has become a signature of their work, demonstrating an ability to imbue each piece with sophisticated humor and unpredictable form.
