In the colophon Visal writes that he wrote the passage for his dear friend Mirza 'Ali Baba (unidentified).

Muhammad Shafi', pen-named Visal Shirazi (1782-1846), was one of the most famous calligraphers, scholars and poets of 19th Century Persia. His biographers also commend his knowledge of music, singing, mathematics, painting and other crafts, the occult sciences and grammar. He was the author of numerous works, in both verse and prose. He wrote in all calligraphic styles, in inks of different colours, and illuminated and painted manuscripts himself. Visal taught many pupils shikasteh and nasta'liq scripts, but his naskhi in the style of Nayrizi was particularly prized, and admirers would pay a high price for a single line written by him. For more on Visal and his work see Mehdi Bayani, ahval va asar-e khosh-nevisan, vol. III, Teheran, 1348 sh., pp. 762, and vol. IV, Teheran, 1358 sh., pp. 165-68. See also M.
