Footnotes

  • Provenance:
    The Property of a Lady.

The text consists of Qur'an, sura I, al-Fatihah, in nasta'liq script; the bismallah in naskhi script; a verse of Hatif Isfahani in thuluth script; and two verses (unidentified) in shikasteh script.

Asadullah Shirazi was a well-known calligrapher of the Qajar period who received the title Katib al-Sultan (Royal Scribe) from Muhammad Shah (reg. 1834-48). He is particularly famous for his unusual copy of the Qur'an, which he wrote in nasta'liq, now in the Gulistan Palace Library in Tehran. His recorded works, mainly calligraphic pages, are dated between AH 1252/AD 1836-37 and AH 1268/AD 1851-52. See Mehdi Bayani, ahval va asar-e khosh-nevisan, vol. I, Teheran, 1345 sh., pp. 60-64. There are only two earlier full copies of the Qur'an in nasta'liq, one by Shah Mahmud Nishaburi dated AH 945/AD 1539 (see M. Lings, The Qur'anic Art of Calligraphy and Illumination, London 1976, no. 91); and the other by Muhammad Husain Damavandi dated AH 1093/AD 1682 (see B. Atabay, Fihrist-i Qur'anha-ye khatt-ye Kitabkhanah-ye Saltanati, Tehran 1351, no. 51).
