Footnotes

  • Provenance:
English deceased estate, acquired before 1980.

    Literature:
This portrait head with its thick curling hair and distinctive central falling locks and sideburns bears some resemblance to portraits of the young Marcus Aurelius, particularly the example from the Roman Forum, cf. D. Kleiner, Roman Sculpture, Yale, 1992, fig.235, pp 270-1. This type of portrait was 'to serve as the primary model for prince portraits of the second and third centuries.'

The piercings in the head are similar to those found on portraits of Alexander the Great in the guise of Helios where he wears a radiate headdress. It appears to have been popular for young Roman noblemen of this period to be depicted clean-shaven with short hair, in the guise of Greek warriors. For example, the bust of a young man in the Metropolitan Museum, New York, also sporting tousled hair and sideburns, depicted in the guise of a Greek hero such as Diomedes, cf. D. von Bothmer (ed.), Glories of the Past. Ancient Art from the Shelby White and Leon Levy Collection, no.155, pp 214-5.
