  • Warrant Officer N.T.S. Storey began his Air Gunner training in May 1943 with 7 A.G.S. and the following month transferred to 30 O.T.U.. He joined 103 Squadron and flew Ops to Berlin on the 18th, 22nd, and 23rd November. In December Ops included Berlin, Liepzig and Frankfurt. In the following January targets again included Berlin and Stettin. With a rest period in February he continues in March with Ops on Stuttgart and Frankfurt, Berlin, Essen and Nurnberg. In April, Essen and Freidrichshaven were among the targets, and in May targets include a factory near Lyons, Mailly-le-Camp and Rennes Aerodrome in preparation for the invasion. In December 1944 he is attached to 1699 C.U. at Oulton where he flys on B17 Flying Fortresses having previously been on Lancasters. Moving to 214 Squadron, the B17's are involved in jamming all German radar preventing the accuracy of flak. In addition the aircraft carried a second Radio Operator who could speak German, his job was to listen to the instructions given by the German Contol to the Fighters, he would tune into this frequency and jam all the communications between the base and the fighters. The equipment used was too big for Lancasters so the B17 was used. He carries out Ops in February 1945 on Chemnitz, Dortmund, Dusseldorf, Horten and Heliogland Bight. In March targets include Bremen, Munster, Wurzburg, Hamburg and Wesel. In April he is sent to Hamburg and Merseburg and finally on the 2nd May Shleswig. He finishes the war having done 275.25 hours and a total of 40 trips.

In addition to the Logbook, box for WW2 medals and an Air Gunner badge, Bomber Command medal and Veteran's badge, the lot comes with a huge archive covering all aspects of his time within the RAF and later as President of the Air Gunners' Association, this is contained in four folders which have been professionally put together and well annotated and include letters, photographs, insignia, Yorkshire Air Museum opening plaque dated 10.7.1997, large photograph of the crew with 103 Squadron March 1944, etc. The lot also includes a variety of books as follows: Tail-End Charlies by John Nichol & Tony Rennell; Guns in the Sky by Chaz Bowyer; Avro Lancaster in Unit Service by Mike Garbett and Brian Goulding; Gunner's Moon by John Bushby; A Thousand Shall Fall by Murray Peden; Bomber by Len Deighton; Tail End Charlie by Denis Clark; Bomber Command by Max Hastings.
