Album containing letters, mostly to the distinguished Victorian artist Thomas Faed RA, including autograph letters etc. by Sir Walter Scott (to "Dear James" [Ballantine], returning "Sheets P & Q to press" and promising to "soon send copy"), Edwin Landseer, David Roberts, Francis Grant, Frederick Tayler (sketch), Edward Bulwer Lytton (thanks for "the long, & valuable as well as kind & flattering notice of my novels"), Charles Kingsley (begging an autograph for his wife), Daniel Maclise, John Watson Gordon (letter for John Zephaniah Bell), and others; plus letters by members of the Faed family and part of an article by Richard Cobden, brown morocco album, gilt monogram on upper cover 'FMF' (for his wife Frances Mary), some leaves removed, 4to

  • Although dated only "Wednesday Morning", a reference to a visit to Melville Castle gives a probable date for the Scott letter of Wednesday, 27 September 1826, soon after his bankruptcy, when hard at work on his life of Napoleon.
