Commissions issued by George III and George IV to George Collard of the Royal East India Company Volunteers, the first, signed by George III, appointing him lieutenant (26 June 1798); the second, also signed by George III, appointing him captain of the Third Regiment (17 October 1805); the third issued in the absence of George IV, signed by the Lords Justices including Wellington, appointing him captain of the infantry (9 October 1820), sewn into a folder with manuscripts and printed ephemera relating to Collard's service, commissions on vellum, seals, some foxing an staining, green boards, worn, folio, 1798-1820

  • The second of these commissions, dated just before Trafalgar, has been counter-signed by Thomas Butts, the great patron, correspondent and friend of William Blake – described by Gilchrist as 'the only large buyer the artist ever had' – in his capacity as joint chief clerk in the office of the Commissary General of Musters (the department responsible for military pay): "Entered with the Commissary General of Musters/ Tho: Butts".
