Lot Details
SAXTON (CHRISTOPHER)
Promontorium hoc in mare proiectum Cornubia dicitur, fine double-page engraved map by William Webb after Saxton, decorative cartouches, title surmounted by royal arms of Charles I, ships and sea-monsters, centre-fold reinforced on verso [Quixley 11], 370 x 487mm., [William Webb, 1645]

Footnotes

  • A fine impression of William Webb's extremely rare map, printed from the Saxton plate but with some important changes: Charles I's arms replace those of Elizabeth, the dedication is replaced by a second title in English ("Cornwal with ye severall hundreds truly described, 1642"), and some retouching makes for greater clarity. See illustration overleaf.
