Footnotes

  • This bracelet and the accompanying extra links were originally part of a bandeau that belonged to Adele, Countess of Essex. Lady Essex, formerly Adele Grant of New York, was a renowned beauty and one of the many American heiresses who married into the British aristocracy at the end of the 19th century. In 1893 she married George Devereux de Vere Capell, 7th Earl of Essex to become his second wife. Upon her death in 1922, the jewel passed to her younger daughter, Lady Joan Capell and thence by direct descent to her daughter, the current owner.
