Footnotes

  • Very little is known about the artist C. J. Martin, but from the few paintings that have been identified as his work, it is evident that he travelled to India, Brazil and Argentina. The present work, executed in 1851, is thought to depict Brazil. Although the work is not signed, this date places it just one year later than the 'View of Rio de Janeiro' by C. J. Martin which was sold at Christie's South Kensington on 24 May 1990 (lot 14). Signed and dated 'Jan. 1850', this composition shares striking similarities to the present lot in the treatment of the group of figures, the bright clear palette, the foliage, and the delicate rose and thorn tracery.

Auction Notices

  • The house depicted here is located in Santa Teresa. It has been suggested by Eduardo Schnoor that it may be the house belonging to Baron de Mauá (later Viscount), a pioneer industrialist in Brazil. He was responsible for developing the railways and other Brazilian infrastructure, and was one of the wealthiest men of his day. His assets at one point were more than the Brazilian Crown's entire yearly budget.
