London Hallmark for 1867
Gilt half plate lever movement, cut and compensated balance, white enamel dial with black Roman numerals and outer five minute markers, blued steel double spade hands, subsidiary seconds at 6, polished round case with blue enamel chapter to the front, Errol or Hay crest to the reverse, together with 18ct gold coin holder with same said crest, dial and movement signed 50mm.

  • This is one of several variants of the crest used by members of the HAY family of Scotland, the chief of whom is/was Earl of Erroll

    But as the scroll is inscribed with the motto 'RENOVATO ANIMOS' [ Trans: Renew your courage ] and is below the crest, one must assume it was being used on this watch by an Englishman named HAY

    More specifically this was recorded for The Revd. Frederick Drummond Hay, M.A., of Lyncombe Lodge, Bath. His crest is described as, 'An aged Lowland Scots countryman (shown from knee-level), dressed in gray, red waistcoat, blue bonnet bearing an ox-yoke on his shoulder.'
