Coloured chalks on paper, signed on the obverse and dated J. Downman/ Pt/ 1786, original rectangular gilded wood frame with foliate borders, labelled on the reverse with sitters' details.

  • Miss Hodgson was one of two daughters born to Field-Marshall John Studholme Hodgson (1708–1798) and his wife, Catherine Howard. Her first cousin was Kenneth Alexander Howard, 1st Earl of Effingham (1767–1845). Field-Marshall John Studholme Hodgson is best known for commanding the 1761 British expedition which captured Belle Île off the coast of France during the Seven Years War. Her brother was Major-General John Hodgson (1757-1846).
