  • PROVENANCE:
    Dr JT Ritchie
    Thence by descent.
James Ritchie was a noted Edinburgh collector who bequeathed Cadell's celebrated The Blue Fan to the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in 1998.

Cadell's pre-war interiors are generally pale and light, lifted by highlights of colour. However, this remarkable view of his studio is realised in a particularly expressive blue, which he tended to use sparingly in still life compositions circa 1913. The highly polished floor and tabletop in the foreground contrast with the forms in the studio, picked out by touches of pure primary colour.
