Early 17th Century, The Close-Helmet Flemish, Third Quarter Of The 16th Century
Comprising close-helmet with rounded one-piece skull with tall roped comb (old brazed repair), sharply-pointed visor with curved embossed and roped upper edges bordered by a recessed line engraved band, stepped horizontal sights with prominent lower edges en suite, and lifting-peg on the right fitting into a notch in the upper bevor, pivoted on later dome-headed rivets at the same points as the upper bevor, the latter prow-shaped with recessed turned and roped upper and lower edges, the right side pierced with a circular arrangement of breaths, lower bevor shaped to the chin and with two locking hook-catches on the right side, and neck-guard of two overlapping plates front and back, the upper borders cusped and the lower borders recessed, turned and roped, gorget of two main plates with two neck-plates at the front and three at the rear, hinged together on the left and secured by pin and keyhole catches on the right, the front plates with low medial ridge and central cusping at the top, the top plates turned and roped, heavy shot-proof breast- and back-plates each flanged at its base and decorated with triple line engraved borders terminating in a design of symmetrical foliage at the top, the breast-plate with medial ridge, articulated arm-defences with large pauldrons each of four plates extending over the front and back, and with four downward-lapping cusped lames (minor damage and repairs) linked by a turning joint to the upper cannons of the vambraces, bracelet couters with heart-shaped side-wings, two overlapping-lames above and below, and tubular lower cannons hinged together and secured by a pin-catch, culet of five upward-lapping engraved plates, and wide knee-length tassets each of nineteen upward-lapping cusped plates, the top ones each secured by a later nut and bolt to a leather belt around the waist, the tassets incorporating poleyns with pointed rounded side-wings, the main edges with line-engraving and turned borders, dome-headed rivets throughout (some pitting): on a wooden stand
