Property from an American Collector
A carved jadeite vessel in the form of an archaic coin
Late 19th/20th Century
Of olive green hue with russet veins and brilliant apple-green inclusions, the high perpendicular walls formed as a spade-shaped coin with ridged rims and a band around the sides, the bottom of the spade with a chilong of bifurcated tail, single horn and mischievous expression carved in raised relief peering over the edge, all supported by five feet in the shape of individually carved tortoises.
8 1/4in (21cm) long

Footnotes

  • The use of archaism by Chinese hardstone artisans is well-documented; however the whimsical addition of the turtles here is unique and points to the later date of manufacture around the fall of the Qing dynasty. The tortoise, generally a symbol of immutability and longevity, was used as supports to stelae carved with the edicts of emperors. Here that same bedrock of stability supports a spade-shaped coin reminiscent of Warring States and Spring and Autumn period currency, a shape that remains to this day as a symbol of financial security throughout the Chinese speaking world.
