Shepherd with sheep signed and dated 'T. Sidney Cooper 1868.' (lower left) oil on canvas 71 x 107.5cm (27 15/16 x 42 5/16in).
PROVENANCE: Cooling Galleries, London Woolley and Wallis, Salisbury, 3 November 1982, lot 117 Henry H. Walrond, of Merriott, Somerset¹ Private collection, UK
Also titled Romney Marsh Sheep with Shepherd and Dog, the present lot is a fine and detailed composition of a young shepherd standing with his dog lying at his feet, among a large flock of sheep in a grassy meadow with a pool in the right foreground and hills in the distance to the left.
The study of the Shepherd (with his dog, standing not lying down), was copied from an early sketch which was also transferred to stone and published as Plate 5 in Lithographic Studies of Rustic Figures by Dickinson, 1833, (see Westwood, T. S. Cooper, Master of Lithography, 1991, pp34-35, Chapter 6, Catalogue No.18, illus pl 11). The shepherd was also included among the figures in Cooper's earlier work; Rural Scene with a Thatched Cottage and a family, oil on canvas, 17x14in., signed and dated 1833.
¹ Henry H. Walrond [1910-2002], reputed to have been the last farmer in Somerset to farm with horses, formed a large collection of paintings after his retirement in the 1970s. Mainly farm scenes and cattle subjects, the majority of the paintings, which eventually included twenty-four paintings by Cooper, one of the largest collections of the artist's work, were mainly dispersed by Bonhams after Henry Walrond's death at the age of 92.
The painting is included in Thomas Sidney Cooper, C.V.O., R.A., His Life and Work by K. J. Westwood, to be published in July 2011, as Catalogue no.O.1868.5
We are grateful to Kenneth Westwood for his assistance in cataloguing this lot.
