Study of a grey Arab mare oil on canvas 51.5 x 61cm (20 1/4 x 24in).
PROVENANCE: with Richard Green, London Private collection, UK
This fully developed study dates from the 1840s when the artist's looser style started to become more evident, particularly in his oil studies. This was most probably a study for a larger composition, however the resulting picture is unknown. Herring himself owned a white arab named Imaum, who he used as an equine model repeatedly and who originally belonged to Queen Victoria.
