Footnotes

  • This bureau is based on a model by Nicolas Pierre Séverin, well-known under the appellation "bureau de l'abbé Terray", previously in the Ministère des Finances, now in the Musée du Louvre since 1924 (OA 7805). This bureau plat has been copied by the finest cabinet makers of the late 19th century such as Beurdeley but also Dasson or Durand (illustrated in Camille Mestdagh, pp.288-289).
The present example is an original example as it is ornated with lacquer panels and its proportions are slightly smaller. Emmanuel Alfred Beurdeley seems to have been the only one to have conceived this model with lacquer, maybe because he made it to be his own bureau.

We can see the present bureau in situ in Emmanuel Alfred Beurdeley's hôtel particulier, in the salon des dessins, rue de Clichy in Paris (see illustration).

In his own Inventory of the content of his hôtel particulier, in 1901, Beurdeley describes it as follows Bureau Louis XV à chutes coquilles. Il est décoré de panneaux en laque du Japon. Réduction d'un meuble plus grand qui se trouvait au Ministère des Finances.
    Exécuté par A. Beurdeley fils
    .

The present model of bureau plat features in the Catalogue des modèles pour bronzes d'art, meubles de style et de grande décoration provenant de la Maison A.Beurdeley, in 1897, 9-12 November, under the lot number 640, described as follows: Bureau plat Louis XV, chute à coquilles. Même modèle plus petit. Ministère de la Marine.

In the workshop archives we also found a photograph of this bureau, executed with a tulipwood veneer (see illustration); the same veneered example can be found in the Beurdeley sale in 1895, 6-9 May: Catalogue of Furniture and Works of Art made in the workshop and under the direction of M.A Beurdeley, under the lot number 286, described as follows: Grand bureau plat de forme contournée et de style Louis XV, en bois de rose enrichi de bronzes ciselés et dorés, grandes chutes à moulures d'encadrement. Dessus en basane verte chagrinée, encadré d'une bordure dorée au fer et bordé d'une large moulure en bronze épousant les contours du meuble. Reproduction du bureau du ministère des Finances. Haut.80cent; long. 1m93 cent.;larg. 1 metre. It was bought by M.Rutgers Le Roy for 5,600 francs or.

    Provenance:
    - Emmanuel Alfred Beurdeley Hôtel Particulier, "salon des dessins", Paris.
