The Beurdeley Collection
An ormolu-mounted mahogany Louis XVI style occasional table
by Emmanuel Alfred Beurdeley, circa 1880
the rectangular white marble top within a balustered gallery, above a drawer, flanked to each angle with a double scroll terminated by eagle's head below a drapery, on circular fluted tapering legs, stamped A.BEURDELEY A PARIS, 61cm wide, 41cm deep, 72.5cm high (24" wide, 16" deep, 28.5" high).

Footnotes

  • This table is based on a model by Etienne levasseur (1721-1798), made for Louis XV's daughters, later called Mesdames, at the Château de Bellevue, now in Versailles, in the Petit Trianon where it had been exhibited in 1867 during the exhibition on Marie Antoinette under the patronage of the Impératrice Eugénie.

We can see the present table in situ in Emmanuel Alfred Beurdeley's hôtel particulier, in the salon des dessins, rue de Clichy in Paris (see illustration with lot 176).

In his own Inventory of the content of his hôtel particulier, in 1901, Beurdeley describes it as follows table en bois d'acajou orné sur les têtes de pieds de rinceaux dans lesquels se lisent des têtes d'aigle s'entrecroisant.
Exécuté d'après un modèle du Garde-Meuble par A. Beurdeley fils
    .

In the workshop archives we found a photograph of this table (see illustration); also, it can be found in the Beurdeley sale in 1895, 6-9 May: Catalogue of Furniture and Works of Art made in the workshop and under the direction of M.A Beurdeley, under the lot number 309, described as follows: Table à ouvrage du Petit Trianon de E.Levasseur, à angles arrondis en acajou moiré, garnie de rais de coeur, cordons de marguerites et de chutes formées d'aigles adossés en bronze ciselé et doré mat. Tablette de marbre blanc bordée d'une balustrade en bronze: pieds cannelés, chapiteaux et sabots striés. Haut. 75 cent; larg.62 cent.; prof. 41 cent. It sold for 1050 francs or.

    Provenance:
    - Emmanuel Alfred Beurdeley Hôtel Particulier, Paris.
    - Emmanuel Alfred Beurdeley's daughter and Thence by descent to the present owner.
