A noble villa in Lombardy, from which acquired at the end of the 19th century by an old Milanese family and thence by descent to the present owner

Together with Marco Ricci (1676–1730) and Antonio Marini (1688–1725), Bartolomeo Pedon can be considered the forerunner of the 18th century Venetian landscape tradition. A member of Fragilia, the guild of Venetian painters, from 1716, he spent most of his career in Padua. The contemporary sources reported his peculiar character and bohemian lifestyle, which was mirrored in the choice of fancy subjects, such as night scenes and shipwrecks, often combined with stylistic originality. The present painting shows the loose brushstroke rich in contrast and the cool vivid colouring which are typical elements of Pedon's oeuvre.
