A George II oak-cased 8-day brass dial longcase clock
Joseph Smith, Chester (working circa 1725-51)
Having a 12-inch square dial, the silvered chapter ring engraved 'Joseph Smith Chester', with Roman hours and Arabic minutes, framing a single-hand quarter-hour track, the matted centre with silvered subsidiary seconds dial and a terrestrial calendar crescent, all within foliate scroll-cast mask spandrels, the knopped and finned four-pillar movement with anchor escapement, rack-striking on a bell, the case having a flat hood with shaped cresting and cushion frieze over turned sunken columns, the long trunk door and plain base on apron, 216cm, (85") high, (sold with two weights, pendulum, key and winder)

    Op. cit. p.129 records Joseph Smith "Worked in Gloverstones 1725-51...Made church clocks Shotwick 1725, Little Budworth 1727, Burton 1751. Page 83 records the original agreement concerning the construction of the Little Budworth clock; It is agreed this 18th day of April 1727, between John Egerton Esqre, and Mr Joseph Smith, Clockmaker, of Gloverstone in Chester. The said Mr Smith for and in consideration of Ten Pounds, shall make a large substantial church clock to go a week, for Little Budworth, and to have strong Brass wheels, and all the other work to be firm and substantial, and to strike as loud as any week clock shall doe". Page 85 illustrates accounts paid to Joseph Smith from 1725 to 1730 for work undertaken towards the construction of the clock at Shotwick, including in 1730 Paid for shiftinge ye Clock-hammer after ye Great bell fell".
    A green-lacquered longcase clock by Joseph smith is also illustrated on p.9, and resides in the Grosvenor Museum, Chester.
