During the 1950s Tunnard did not tie himself to any one commercial gallery, as a result the records of his work from this period are rather sparse. Peat and Whitton write 'some of the more effective paintings from this period were ones which reflected strongly on his training as a designer. Two heads (1955: Fig.48), for instance, shows compositional devices which lend a feeling of unity to the painting, such as the placing of the darker head and the related light yacht alongside the light head and dark yacht.'
