Lot Details
SASSOON (SIEGFRIED)
Two autograph postcards signed ("S. Sassoon" and "Siegfried Sassoon"), to V.W. Garratt, the first about Graves ("...Graves's book is rather inaccurate & misleading. I wasn't quite such a mad hatter as he has chosen to suggest! I prefer to be known as a fairly reasonable being who likes a quiet life. Have you read 'Undertones of War'? That is a 1000 times better book than Graves's..."); the second commenting on his photograph overleaf taken when finishing Memoirs of an Infantry Officer ("...a fair idea of what I looked like when trying to finish my book at Syracuse last March! It was not possible for me to reveal Sherston as a 'poet'. To have done so would have made the book too complicated. Sherston, in both volumes, is a simplified vehicle for my simplified experience. I had to keep him inside his frame, so to speak..."); the first showing an Italian view overleaf, the second a photograph of Sassoon holding a folder [?holding the manuscript of Memoirs of an Infantry Officer], 2 pages, stamps, minor creasing and smudging but in attractive condition, 8vo, Palermo, 1 January 1930, and [London], 7 October 1930

Footnotes

  • Sassoon describes his aims in writing Memoirs of an Infantry Officer and attacks Gravee's portrait of him in Goodby to All That, which he declares to be vastly inferior to Blunden's Undertones of War. Goodbye to All That had appeared the previous year. At Sassoon's insistence all copies of the first impression, containing a private verse poem he had sent Graves, were pulped. Blunden was equally horrified by the book.
