Footnotes

  • Henry Wilson is regarded as one of the leading metalsmiths and designers or the Arts and Crafts movement. He trained as an architect under John Sedding and took over Sedding's firm after his death in 1891. Henry Wilson, also known as "Harry", went on to set up his own studio workshops in Kensington, London, circa 1895, and Sevenoaks, Kent in 1902. He was a founding member of the Art Worker's Guild, and regularly taught at the Central School of Arts and Crafts and at the Royal College of Art.

Wilson is perhaps more commonly known for his jewellery and silver designs, often executed by H.G Murphy. The design for these candlesticks is seen reproduced in Atterbury and Benjamin's 'The Jewellery and Silver of H.G. Murphy: Arts and Crafts to Art Deco', Antiques Collectors Club, 2005, pg19, with a similar example without the emblems also shown. These are a rare example of his secular work of which only three other examples are known to exist.
