Footnotes

  • Margaret Holmes was a pupil at South Kensington Art School for several years in the last quarter of the 19th Century. Becoming one of the School's most successful and celebrated pupils, she dedicated herself to passing all stages of the South Kensington Course and crowned her success with a Silver Medal, three National Book Prizes and the Art Class Teacher's Certificate and Art Mistress' Certificate, Group 1, (at least two of the present lot relate to these prizes). The whole process, however, took her at least six years. She later became an art tutor, including a spell at Norwich Art School and her work is represented in the Norwich Art School Collection.

The E.S.K. blindstamp on these works indicates 'Examined South Kensington'.
