The shaped rectangular bevelled plate, within a moulded slip surrounded by eight bevelled marginal plates and a moulded outer frame, inscribed to the reverse 'This glass belonged to Lady DUNDAS nee Caroline Jeffreys and came to Coulsdon from South Street.Hung at Coulsdon for many years Caroline Dundas is the Lady with the shawl in her picture' also inscribed in pencil 'Lt. Butler', 104cm high, 93cm wide, (40.5" high, 36.5" wide).

  • Provenance: this mirror was almost certainly once owned by Caroline Dundas. John Burnet Dundas was born 14 November 1794 and was the son of Sir David Dundas and Isabella, daughter of William Robertson Esq. Sir David was one of the medical attendants of George III and was created a baronet 22 May 1815. John Dundas entered the navy on 10 July 1807. He married on 30 December 1828 in Barnes, Surrey, Caroline, third daughter of the Rev. John Jeffreys, Rector of Barnes.
