  • Provenance: West Acre High House, Castle Acre, King's Lynn, Norfolk

West Acre High House in Norfolk was built by the eccentric writer and translator Edward Spelman (d.1767) in 1756. The house was purchased by Richard Hammond (1709-1776) from the impoverished Spelman family in 1761. The design of the house was considered by contemporaries to be highly unusual with its piano nobile arrangement which was also employed around this time in Norfolk at both Holkham Hall and Houghton Hall.

The house comprises of a south front with seven bays with the central five deeply recessed and the north front consists of thirteen bays as the side wings are built level with the main house. The wings were an addition implements by Richard Hammond's son Anthony Hammond (1742-1822), Sheriff of Norfolk 1792-3, whose soubriquet 'Rabbitskins' was earned through rabbit farming and his willingness to prosecute for petty theft. His son Philip (1782-1824) outlived him by only two years but Philip's son Anthony (1805-1869) took a leading role in Norfolk life both as a Liberal politician and an agriculturalist. Anthony Hammond Junior altered the house in 1829 when he implemented a re-modelling under the supervision on the architect W J Donthorn who re-faced the house in oatmeal coloured Holkham brick and crenellated the house. He created a double-flight staircase and a picture gallery based on five perfect cubes, mirroring the picture gallery at Buckingham Palace.

The house was purchased rather than inherited by Henry Birkbeck in 1897 although he had in fact been married to Anthony Hammond's daughter since 1849. The house was to remain in the Birkbeck family throughout the 20th century until it was sold to the artist Anthony Gormley in 2010.
