Professor Annemarie Schimmel, the leading German Islamologist, suggested that "it (the 'nuqta') might be an allusion to a representation of the 'Primordial Dot,' the first thing that according to some mystics' thought, appeared on the empty tablet of creation ... out of this dot the line developed, and out of the line all the rest". For Gulgee, his fascination with the intense stillness of the nuqta peaked in the later stage of his life, and has been associated by Schimmel and others with a "strong mystical feeling". This strong example from the Nuqta series, dated 1998, is also signed and dated on the back of the painting, and bears the inscription "Collection" that Gulgee used to designate works that were for his personal collection, and what he considered to be among his strongest examples. The present owners acquired the work directly from the artist in 1998.
