Footnotes

  • Marianne was one of six children born to Sir Edward Bowyer-Smijth, 10th Baronet (1785-1850) and Laetitia Cecily Weyland (1787-1868). It's possible that the present portrait was painted during her engagement to Colonel Sir Samuel Brise Ruggles-Brise DL, JP, KCB, of Spains Hall, Essex, whom she married on the 4th May 1847. She died on the 12th December 1900.
