Footnotes

  • Literature:
Garcin, G., Tout Peut Arriver (Paris: Filigranes Éditions, 2007), unpaginated

At the age of 65, Gilbert Garcin retired from his lamp-making business in Marseille and took up photography. Since then, his output has been prolific: he has published several successful books on his work, has featured in exhibitions across the globe, and has secured a place for his photographs in prestigious private and public collections.

Inspired by Margritte, Garcin uses photomontage techniques to create surreal, often absurd, scenes in which his fictional 'Mr Everyone' character takes centre stage. Embedded in his images is humour and a sense of universality that generates mass appeal, as Mr Everyone confronts situations and predicaments that are all too familiar to the viewer. Garcin explores the relationship between the real and the imagined, creating existentialist worlds where any heavy philosophies of life are deflected by playfulness.
