    Literature:
David Octavius Hill and Robert Adamson (exh. cat. Scottish Arts Council's centenary exhibition of the work of Hill and Adamson, touring May 1970 - May 1971, curated by K. Michaelson), plate 1 (D.O. Hill), plate 20 (Mrs & Miss Rigby), plate 30 (H. McCulloch)
Stevenson, S., The Personal Art of David Octavius Hill, (New Haven: Yale University Press, 2002), p.45, plate 28 (D.O. Hill)

Stevenson's publication describes the image of Hill as a self-portrait: 'The photograph of Hill draped in a blanket.. is one of two studies for calotypes of the writer and artist in stained glass, James Ballantyne. A calotype of Ballantyne in his own tight jacket and cravat had proved unimpressive.. By examining the pose, lighting and the background of his self-portraits, Hill was able to construct a far stronger portrait of Ballantyne.' (p.45)
