Footnotes

  • Provenance:
While assistant to photographer Richard Avedon in the late 1960s and early 1970s, the present owner was involved in Avedon's editing of Lartigue's publication, Diary of a Century (1970). The current print was used for reproduction in the book, and gifted to the owner by Lartigue on completion of the project.

    Literature:
Lartigue, J-H., Diary of a Century (New York: Viking Press, 1970), unpaginated (this print)

Diane and Rosalind Rowe (born 1933), are notorious in the world of English sport for their spectacular victory in doubles table tennis in the World Championships in Vienna in 1951 and again at the Royal Albert Hall in 1954 (on their 21st birthday). Fiercely competitive and naturally gifted at the game, the girls became table tennis stars across the globe. Their sisterly rivalry, combined with genetics (one girl was left-handed and the other right), meant that they made a natural doubles partnership, with an innate understanding of each other. Diane referred to them as "a machine, in automatic harmony".
