Footnotes

  • Provenance Lots 33-35:
    By descent from the photographer;
    Sotheby's London, 9 May 2002, lot 203.

    Erna Lendvai-Dircksen is recognised as one of the leading portraitists of 1920s Germany, her images of German peasants and rural life in Germany receiving the attention (and approval) of the Nazi regime to the extent that she was commissioned by Adolf Hitler to publish several propaganda books on his idealised "Volk". Throughout the 1940s, Lendvai-Dircksen became increasingly interested in landscape photography, later publishing her works in books including Wanderdünen and, in colour, in Urgestalt in Kreide und Granit.
