Footnotes

  • Provenance: Reputedly the former property of Edward Burgess Hudson (1854 – 1936), publishing magnate and founder of Country Life Magazine, 1897.

The table formed part of the furnishings at Lindisfarne Castle, Northumberland, Mr Hudson's country residence from 1901 and re-modelled by Sir Edward Lutyens. The Castle was sold in 1921, along with its contents, to Sir Edward de Stein, who placed it in the care of the National Trust in 1944. At this point various items were given to the housekeeper, a Mrs Rutherford, including this table. Mrs Rutherford remained on Lindisfarne until her death in 2008 when the table was sold as part of the estate.
