    Acquired from Louis Joseph, London
    An English private collection

Jade mountains are generically referred to as 'shoushan' ('mountains of longevity'), reflecting the close connection in Chinese thought between jade and immortality, and they commonly are decorated with scenes of pavilions, rocks and trees. A related, but much larger, white jade mountain with a scene of a mountain retreat, pines, two figures and a crane is in the Imperial Collection in the Palace Museum, Beijing, and is illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum. Jadeware (III), Hong Kong, 1995, p.86, fig. 73. Another white jade boulder with slight natural colourings, from the De An Tang Collection, again depicts a mountain scene with figures on the front and a simpler carving of trees, rocks and animals on the reverse, illustrated by Yang Boda, A Romance with Jade From the De An Tang Collection, Hong Kong, 2004, p.122-123, fig. 69.
