Footnotes

  • Provenance: a private Austrian collection.

The present panel belongs to a relatively small group of other examples with this same design, thought to have come out of Tibet some time in the twentieth century. There are two examples in the Musée Guimet in Paris; one from the Krishna Riboud Collection, and the other also illustrated in Jacqueline Simcox Ltd., Chinese Textiles and Works of Art, London, 2005, p.13. Further examples in this group are discussed in two articles published in Orientations magazine see: S.Ogasawara, Chinese Fabrics of the Song and Yuan Dynasties preserved in Japan, August 1989 and V.Reynolds, Buddhist Silk Textiles: Evidence for Patronage and Ritual Practice in China and Tibet, April 1997.
