Kakejiku, in ink and colour on silk, depicting a group of passers-by in Yoshiwara, curiously gazing at two reclining courtesans at leisure inside a tea house, one reading a book, while another walks away, seen from behind and partially hidden by the bamboo sudare, signed Zeshin with two seals Reisai and Zeshin; with wood storage box, and certificate of authentication dated Meiji 30 (1897) by Tomioka Tessai (1836-1924). 123cm x 53.7cm (48 3/8in x 21 1/8in).     The go of Reisai is said to be derived from the artist's two masters. The first character is from painter Suzuki Nanrei (1775-1844) and the second from lacquer artist Koma Kansai (1767-1835), and Zeshin started to use the go from around the age of sixteen.
