A lacquered-wood bento-bako (lunch box) in the form of a shogi-ban (Japanese chess games board) with a complete set of koma (chess pieces) and sakazuki (sake cup)
Meiji/Taisho Period
The playing surface of ochre lacquer with black lacquer divisions also forming the detachable cover, lifting to accomodate within two vertical stacking sections, the lowest integral with the stand and the uppermost forming a removable tray, the sides of roiro-nuri decorated with aoi-mon scattered within a bamboo trellis in gold hiramakie with details enhanced in e-nashiji, the interior of rich nashiji, unsigned, 15.2cm x 27.3cm x 23.8cm (6in x 10¾in x 9 3/8in); with en-suite small box and cover, similarly decorated, containing forty-one (one surplus piece) wood wedge-shaped pieces, unsigned, 6cm x 10.2cm x 8.9cm (2 3/8in x 4in x 3½in); and a red lacquer sakazuki painted with Ebisu seated on a rock and reeling in a large tai, in gold takamakie, unsigned, 6cm (2 3/8in) diam.; with lacquer storage box.
