A gold lacquer suzuribako (writing box) and cover
Meiji Period
The greenish-coloured nashiji ground of the flush-fitting cover embellished in gold and slightly-coloured takamakie with tied bundles of nadeshiko, kikyo and tsukushi imitating Bugaku musical instruments of a sho pipe, tsuzumi drum and a fan, all resting on a hillock, behind which are growing other Autumnal plants, the two corners of the cover decorated with a cloud, the design extending over the sides of the box; the inside of the lid similarly lacquered with drifting wisteria petals imitating butterflies; with removable en-suite implement tray containing original fittings: an exquisite silvered and gilt-metal suiteki in the form of overlapping wisteria petals, and an inkstone; unsigned; with wood storage box. 4.6cm x 26cm x 23cm (1¾in x 10¼in x 9in).
