The cover finely carved with three apes, the adult growling at the crab which traps the finger of her offspring between its pincers, the monkey squealing in pain whilst a third monkey cowers behind its mother, signed with seal Tomioka. 6.8cm x 11.6cm x 20.7cm (2 5/8in x 4½in x 8 1/8in). (2).

    The Meiji Period craftsman Tomioka was renowned for his realistic and humorous carving of monkeys on ivory. A tusk vase carved with monkeys by the artist was sold in these rooms, 11 May 2010, lot 331.
